Your home may look spotless after a good cleaning—but what’s lurking in the air could tell a different story. Scientists are warning that many everyday cleaning products release hundreds of hazardous chemicals indoors, posing long-term health and environmental risks.
Toxic Compounds Hidden in Common Cleaning Products
In a study published in the journal Chemosphere, researchers from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed 30 widely available cleaning products and identified 193 unique hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals are linked to respiratory irritation, developmental and reproductive harm, and even increased cancer risk.
“This study is a wake-up call for consumers, researchers, and regulators to be more aware of the potential risks associated with the numerous chemicals entering our indoor air,” said Alexis Temkin, Ph.D., senior toxicologist at EWG.
VOCs are carbon-based compounds that evaporate at room temperature. While not all are dangerous, those that are can carry serious health consequences when inhaled. The research team found 530 total VOCs across the tested products—193 of which were deemed harmful.
Products with the most “chemicals of concern” included popular brands such as Glade Clean Linen air freshener, Lestoil Heavy Duty Multi-Purpose spray, HDX glass cleaner, and Scott’s Liquid Gold wood cleaner.
The Health Risks of Traditional Cleaning
For professional cleaners and households alike, repeated exposure to these chemicals can be dangerous. A 2020 study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine revealed that cleaners have a 50% higher risk of developing asthma and a 43% greater risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared to non-cleaners.
Another 2018 study found that inhaling household cleaning products could be as damaging to lung health as smoking a 20-pack of cigarettes a day—particularly for women. Children are also especially vulnerable to these airborne toxins during early stages of development.
Beyond human health, VOCs can also harm the environment. “They may also harm the environment,” said Samara Geller, EWG senior director of cleaning science. “When these chemicals diffuse into our outdoor environment, they can contribute to existing air pollution.”
Green Alternatives Help—But the Best Way to Clean Is Without Chemicals
While manufacturers have begun reducing VOC emissions, research shows that even so-called “green” cleaning products can still release pollutants into the air. Products labeled “green” emitted about half the VOCs of conventional ones, and fragrance-free green options performed best—emitting up to eight times fewer VOCs than traditional products.
“Going green with your cleaning products is an easy way to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals,” said Geller. “This may be especially important for women’s and children’s health.”
However, even the safest cleaning sprays still introduce airborne particles. The American Lung Association recommends increasing ventilation when using cleaning products—opening doors and windows and avoiding confined spaces.
The Central Vacuum Advantage
At The Best Way to Clean, we believe the healthiest home is one that doesn’t rely on chemical sprays or perfumed cleaners at all. A central vacuum system provides deep, powerful cleaning without the toxic trade-offs.
Unlike portable vacuums that recirculate dust and allergens, central vacuum systems remove dirt, debris, and contaminants directly from living spaces and expel them outdoors—keeping indoor air pure and fresh. This means fewer pollutants, less need for chemical cleaning agents, and a safer environment for your family and pets.
By eliminating dust at the source rather than masking it with artificial fragrances, central vacuum systems offer the most thorough, chemical-free cleaning solution available today.
The Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Choice
The science is clear: even “everyday” cleaning can pollute the air inside your home. By switching to a central vacuum system, you’re not only improving cleanliness—you’re protecting your health and the planet.
At The Best Way to Clean, our mission is to help homeowners achieve a deeper, safer, and truly healthier clean. Ditch the harmful sprays. Breathe easier. Clean smarter.
